Racoons Seen in the Park

By April 24, 2025 No Comments

At 1AM this morning I stepped out onto my front porch and was surprised by 2 large racoons sauntering by on my pathway to the street (I’m in Space 179, they were moving from the greenbelt towards the street). The one behind looked up at me for a moment before continuing his journey. I hope they’re not here to wreak havoc on our trash cans! They’ll likely be gone before morning. Another reminder of how close to the edge of civilization we are here and how lucky we are that even raccoons want to check out our lovely area.

Raccoons in the desert? I moved here from Kirkland WA where there was lots of water and greenery everywhere. I saw many raccoons in my back yard over the years I lived there. A few years ago several residents and visitors to our park assisted me in rescuing 3 baby raccoons that were huddled in a secluded corner of my lot. That got me to wondering how they survive in this climate. Unfortunately later that day someone informed us that the babies were probably orphans, a raccoon was crushed nearby on Hwy 74. Now I’m wondering again how they survive here.
