… after they almost fell out of place.
The other day I walked by our bookcase when something made me stop. It wasn’t an impulse. Nor would I call it intuition. It was as if a part of myself was trying to get my attention. Like an itch on my shoulder signaling me that it needed to be scratched.
However, as I walked past by our bookcase something “called out” to me that I wouldn’t really consider a part of myself. Frankly, I wouldn’t even consider it an extended part of myself. And it wasn’t exactly a call. Nor was it a whisper. It was just a very natural perception. For lack of better words, it was as if I were being “told”:
“Hey, can you do me a favor and check something? I think my shelves are out of place.”
Curiously enough, I did not hesitate. Nor did I react with what, in retrospect, could be regarded as downright warranted astonishment. Instead, I simply responded as if “hearing” a bookshelf was the most natural thing in the world.
And yes. I lifted my head.
I looked upward and lo and behold, the entire front of the top shelf was not lying on its brackets. To be honest, I have no idea why the shelf hadn’t crashed down already. Whatever was holding it in place was definitely not the support pins. And to make matters worse, the shelf below was barely touching its brackets as well.
Mind you, those are glass shelves. They are part of a built-in bar. We use them for our photo albums instead of bottles. If those shelves were to fall down …
I’ve heard different explanations for how we can perceive something we cannot hear, see, touch, taste or smell. Some call it divine connection or spiritual alignment. Others point out that we are biologically the same as all living things; chemically the same as the earth; and atomically the same as the entire universe. That not only connects but interconnects us in ways far beyond the fact that every living and non-living thing in this world contributes to each other’s existence.
Personally, I don’t know what made me stop and look at our bookshelves that day. But whatever it was, I’m soooo glad I listened!
